What drew Dr. Nneamaka Nwubah to the field of plastic surgery was the element of artistry mixed with a dose of dignity she could bring to the operating table.
Known to colleagues and clients as Dr. Amaka, the accomplished board-certified surgeon at Maxwell Aesthetics in Nashville, Tennessee said she was in medical school at Vanderbilt University participating in a plastic surgery rotation when she realized her calling.
“I decided to become a plastic surgeon because of the transformative aspect but also because it was such an artistic field,” she said. “My first exposure was in treating women who had breast cancer and had their breast removed, which is the field of breast reconstruction.”
The road to her success was long, having studied for 16 years after she graduated from high school to become a plastic surgeon. Prior to medical school, she graduated from Louisiana State University. After medical school, she was selected for a six-year training residency program with the University of Kentucky in Lexington where she once again excelled. She was then awarded an aesthetic surgery fellowship at the Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Amaka said that despite the long, hard hours of study and research, it was a very worthwhile journey that now allows her to make the lives of her patients better.
“My favorite part (of my job) is helping people every day to restore themselves and their confidence,” she said.
The motivation behind her work is always in the best interest of her patients, she said, noting that it is extremely important to her that her patients feel comfortable and well cared for throughout the entire process.
“My goals are to treat people with dignity and respect, and do good work,” she said.
Dr. Amaka’s patients are responding well to that kind of treatment, leaving raving reviews on her practice’s website that detail the surgeon’s approach as “very professional and courteous. My favorite part was how available she was and answered many questions I had. I also trusted her professional opinions and allowed her to make a lot of decisions for me, which turned out great.”
As she looks to the future, Dr. Amaka said she plans to continue practicing plastic surgery and continue her quest to never stop learning in her field. She plans to continue her research in the field of plastic surgery as well as explore some other areas of interest she has had outside of the medical practice.
“I want to expand my entrepreneurial skills as a “doctor-preneur” in different varying fields and businesses,” she said.
She is a lifelong learner, researcher, writer and an avid chef, which she showcases on social media. On Instagram, as @dr_amakamd, she has a following of more than 58,000 people who are regularly treated to cooking, dancing, inspiration and more.
“It’s a whole vibe right here,” she recently posted. “Treat everyone kindly and with respect and don’t live your life worried about what people will think. Just get out there and live.”
